Education

Psychology Degree
Holds a degree in Psychology, in the field of Social and Organizational Psychology (Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada), which he obtained in December, 1993. In the process of obtaining his degree and as a means of pursuing his academic training, he joined a consulting firm that specialized in the area of communication, where he worked for a period of six months (period of time in which the training took place). In the academic module in which he was evaluated he obtained a mark of 16 over 20.
MSc
“Clinical and Development Psychology”, from the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Psychology and Education Studies (Faculdade de Psicologia e Ciências da Educação da Universidade de Coimbra), where he was given a Very Good mark. He defended a thesis on the subject of “Psycho-social aspects in the HIV Positive Patient – From Social Death to Physical Death” (“Aspectos Psicossociais do Doente Seropositivo – Da morte Social à Morte Física”), which took place on May, the 25th, 1998, and which was received unanimously with a Very Good mark.
PhD
In the 18th of December of 2007 he presented his PhD Thesis about “El dolor y el sufrimiento en la enfermedad crónica – La creacion del sentido de vivir”, under the supervision of Doctor Ginés Llorca Ramón and of Doctor José Luís Pio de Abreu, with the classification of “Sobressaliente con Laude” and mention to honor price.
PhD in “Psychiatry and Medical Psychology”, in the University of Salamanca in the academic year of 2002/2003, within the course corresponding to the two-year period of 2002/2004. He completed the academic component in July, 2003 with the top mark in doctorate programmes. He then went on to initiate his investigation period in the academic year of 2003/2004, which he pursued until July 2005 (according to a plan approved by the thesis tutor and with the acknowledgment of the Faculty of Medical Science, of the University of Salamanca (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Salamanca).
In the process of completing his thesis (tesina), which was part of the doctorate programme that he had been attending, whose completion guaranteed him the degree from the University of Salamanca, and after defending in public his paper, he was awarded the mark Superior (Sobressaliente), with praise (louvor). Subsequently he was given the degree that enables him fully to follow his investigations, that of Sufuciencia Investigadora. His top marks in each and every aspect of the evaluation process so far carried out have granted him the degree of PhD with a specialization in Psychiatry and Medical Psychology.

Work Experience

Consulting
Throughout the process of getting his degree and as a means of coping with his academic pursuits and personal goals, he kept an activity in the field of organizations. In this context he has done work as consultant in such areas as: market studies, image studies and the introduction of new products. His working experience went on to include such lines of work as consulting in public relations and in business communication, management in human resources, freelance work in data analysis and in investigation. His experience includes, as well, positions in career training, in such fields as training management, all the way from pinpointing needs to organizing the training process.
During the course of his academic and professional activities he has done work as a representative of medical information, insurance agent and finally, as a way of coping with his professional activity and the attendance at classes in his degree in Psychology, later his MSc, he did work as a business consultant in the field of communication, marketing, advertising and management, mainly with the development of opinion and image studies, as well as similar work in market and business communication.
During this period of time and to the present he has worked as a trainer, with a certificate from the institute responsible for that area in Portugal (formador certificado pelo IEFP). He has organized and supervised various training sessions, for which he has taken full responsibility. These have enabled him to handle situations which involved certifications granted by the INOFOR to several organizations (v.g. Escola Profissional de Comércio Externo). In this context he was in charge of the pedagogical aspect of several training sessions, which meant that he had to prepare training proposals. It was also his job to develop and keep pedagogical portfolios, to evaluate the training process and other management and training activities.
For three years he held positions of technical responsibility in the development of studies and polls in the Instituto Superior da Maia, Instituto Superior Miguel Torga, which he kept until December 2004. In the exercise of his functions he has carried out a number of electoral polls (presidential, for city council, European and parliamentary), which have been directed to the institution in charge of such issues in Portugal (Alta Autoridade para a Comunicação Social); as well as psycho-social studies. In the realm of psycho-social opinion studies, throughout all of his working experience, he has developed, adapted and assessed various instruments of measurement in Psychology and de psycho-social analysis, as well as in opinion studies generally taken. In order to materialize such activities he has developed his skills in the use of several types of software in the field of statistics, namely SPSS, SYSTAT and Statistica. On the other hand, during the course of his teaching experience, he has developed his skills as far as psychometrics is concerned.
In December 1997 he took part in the organization of two electoral polls, carried out in the district of Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, which were promoted by a study centre that is a part of the University of Coimbra (Centro de Gestão de Recursos Humanos do Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Coimbra).
In January 1998, he organized and supervised an image and market study for a newspaper in Coimbra, Diário de Coimbra. This study was developed in a management centre in of that city, which is part of a local polytechnic (Centro de Gestão de Recursos Humanos do Instituto Superior de Serviço Social de Coimbra).
In the area of studies and polls, in January 2005, he took a position in the direction (Direcção de Serviços, e Direcção Técnica da Empresa) of REGIPOM, a firm which specializes in market studies, polls and opinion studies. In this quality he has carried out the process of certification of the company within the Portuguese institution which regulates media activity in this country (Alta Autoridade para a Comunicação Social) – something which has been successfully met, in early February 2005. Up until March 2005 he conducted an electoral poll (election for Cabinet – Legislativas), having done so in nine districts; and an electoral poll (election for Cabinet – Legislativas) in the district of Aveiro. He was also in charge of the preparation of image and market studies, aimed at setting a profile of the newspaper reader in Portugal (islands excluded); a study which focused in quality in health services; a survey (this happened monthly) that was a reliable barometer for the City Council election of 2005. He was in charge of several advertisements campaigns for newspapers that are part of the organization of which REGIPOM is a part. Furthermore, he has been responsible for the carrying out of a poll which was aimed at the City Council election of 2005.
He keeps a position as a consultant in the realm of human resources management and Occupational Health Psychology, in which he has had the opportunity of developing recruitment and selection processes, organizational diagnosis, performance assessment, analysis and qualification of functions, preparing welcoming handbooks, as well as each and every process that goes with the job of strategic management in human resources, psychossocial diagnostics, and intervention in Stress, Burnout and Emotional Disorders in the workplace.

Teaching Positions

From the academic year of 1995/1996 until that of 1998/1999, he taught the semi-annual subjects of Advertising and Marketing, Practices in Group Psychology, part of the syllabus in the degree of Social Service (Licenciatura em Serviço Social). He was also responsible for teaching practical classes in subjects such as “Methodology in Investigation, part of the Msc in Drug Addiction and Social Pathologies, at the Instituto Superior Miguel Torga de Coimbra.
He his a Professor at Instituto Superior da Maia, since the academic year 1996/1997 until the present time. As from the academic year 1998/1999, having completed his MSc, he has become a fulltime Professor there, and at the moment he his Assistant Professor in Psychology, and responsible of the Investigation Unit of Health and Occupational Health Psychology.
